artwork that embraces the Divine Feminine, in all her light and darkness

Sara Breslin has made a name for herself as a Symbolist Figure Artist with colorful, feminine work informed by the late 19th-century Art Nouveau style and the early 20th-century Surrealism movement. She began her art journey unlike her peers, by starting her college career as a Pre-Med student, on the path to practicing medicine. It wasn’t until her sophomore year when an art professor saw her "hobbyist talent” and told her “what a shame, such wasted talent” and sent Breslin careening on a different path. To others dismay, she changed course and obtained her BFA in 2014 from the University of Rhode Island, having majored in Fine Arts, and has continued her studio practice in Rhode Island ever since.

“Changing majors was a huge decision for me, probably one of the scariest decisions I had ever made, but for the first time in my life I felt empowered to put myself first, to show up for me, to do what I wanted. It was intoxicating and I try to channel that sense of empowerment through all of the pieces I make.”

Breslin’s watercolor and mixed media paintings meld reality and fantasy to create empowering images of the Divine Feminine. These images employ strong narrative concepts, incorporating elements from nature, ancient symbols, and dynamic colors to breathe life into her mesmerizing figures. Through her work, Breslin explores the power of womxn and femininity while delving into the complexity of human emotions. Her own experiences deeply inform Breslin’s work, and she uses her paintings to express and affirm her own gender identity and spiritual connections.

“I felt so drawn to the human figure, I just assumed I was destined to be in the medical field. Turns out I just really enjoy painting pretty magical womxn.”

With representation in local and national galleries, Breslin’s art has become a unique addition to the community. She regularly shows work in exhibitions and art fairs and frequently collaborates with nonprofits Beyond the Diagnosis and Art for Eyes. Most notably, in 2023 Breslin presented an ambitious solo exhibition, Sonder at AS220 in Providence, RI.
